Dan, yes, it isn't easy and definitely worth it. I agree, that blueprints have good ideas. I've invested in a few in my time and pulled out what made sense for what I was building. But I see so many people get stuck trying to implement a blueprint and just give up because they can't make it work for them. More and more it's our uniqueness that gets people's attention (and business),so the risk taking is required to stand out and get noticed.

Beautifully stated Susan! Not much more to add other than "Amen, & preach on!"

3am - cold sweat - anxiety brain - head swimming moments; plenty of them. Especially the two weeks before opening "my" doors.

Freaked out to the point of queezy-belly almost vomiting; every time I write and hit "publish".

Hot sweats - clammy hands - and more internal voices of self-doubt than I can count; every time I get up in front of a group to speak.

But it is SO worth it!!! "Blueprints" have some good ideas in them, some great suggestions, but there is nothing to make it "easy" other than hard work, long hours, and an understanding of the benefits of failing.

If it was "easy", everyone would be a billionaire...

Sean, the marketers who tell us that our success comes from their information are essentially giving the public what they want to hear. Personally, I've experimented with selling "solutions" and selling "education." Guess what sells? Yep. Solutions. However, we don't have to buy into savvy marketers flashy pitch and can educate ourselves about what is underneath their selling process. When we strip away the videos and pretty pictures we can evaluate if the product they are selling is worth our time or not. This is the same process we use to evaluate TV advertising, online brochures of vacation locales on the internet, etc. Informed consumers don't need to become cynical, just smarter : ).

Mike, I love your thoughts here and it's a (deeper) perspective I had not considered. But you are so right in pointing out that when we seek growth and validation in the form of packaged "solutions" we are forfeiting our power and knowledge. Smart marketers actually play on that. They talk about writing sales pages that articulate the reader's fear and then agitate that fear again to get people really in a negative emotional state so they will buy the "solution." Smart sales psychology, but not so nice of a human-to-human interaction. Ultimately, we all have things to learn and investing in learning is smart and necessary. However, investing in something or someone to save you from your fear and insecurity is a losing proposition.

Hey Susan, thanks for this one, and for the record we did meet inevitably. :-)

I agree that people need to keep in mind that a lot of what gets"packaged" is the comforting idea that success can be imparted on to others. In my opinion that is false advertising. We can consult with people, but then we have to weigh their ideas, make our own decisions, and live with that.

In idealizing some guru, we are actually acting out the idea that all of the goodness and knowledge resides outside of ourselves, and that we are empty and valueless. At least that's my object relations take on it. Crying on a Saturday sounds like a right-sized human thing to me, even if it is unpleasant. But if you filled a bottle with all the guru advice in the world, guess what? It would weigh the same as the empty bottle. Sometimes we just need to sit with emptiness. Growth happens then.

Great post Susan. I appreciate your honesty about building a business. It is hard and emotional and I feel that there are too many on the internet who claim success if you would only buy their product. It is hard not to get cynical about that sometimes.

Arlene, yep. We all get discouraged from time to time. I think that is sort of life, no matter what we are working on. What do you think?

Dawn, glad to hear that roller coaster isn't as daunting these days. Getting support is absolutely the way to go. It takes a village to raise a business : ).

Thanks, Ruth. This site has served me well for a few years, but it's time for something new. I have a very specific vision for it and it's been hard to find someone to support that vision until a few days ago.
